Mission Statement

3D - > Trade - Human Rights - Equitable Economy promotes collaboration amongst trade, development and human rights professionals, to ensure that trade rules are developed and applied in ways that promote an equitable economy respectful of Human Rights.
3D´s current activities include:
Intellectual property and Human Rights
- 3D encourages greater collaboration between human rights advocates and development groups in order to achieve a pro-development and human rights-consistent approach to intellectual property systems. This work currently focuses on using human rights rules and mechanisms to provide tools to advocates and policy-makers and ensure greater accountability in intellectual property policy-making.
- 3D monitors intellectual property rules in bilateral and regional Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and their impact on the enjoyment of human rights and is following discussions on the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Development Agenda.
- 3D brings country-specific information to the UN human rights treaty supervisory bodies about the impact of trade-related intellectual property rules on access to medicines and human rights. In December 2005, 3D submitted a country briefing on the impact of FTA rules on access to affordable medicines and children´s rights in Thailand to the Committee on the Rights of the Child.
- 3D organizes expert meetings and holds seminars on intellectual property and human rights issues. The last meeting, an In-Depth Study Session on Intellectual Property and Human Rights, was held on 23-24 September 2005.
WTO-related activities
- 3D organizes events regarding the WTO and human rights. For example, we organized, in collaboration with the Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights, a panel on human rights impact assessments applied to trade policies at the WTO Public Forum 2009.
Study sessions
- 3D organizes study sessions and presentations on various trade and human rights themes. In May 2009, 3D organized a seminar on investment in agricultural land for offshore food and fuel production and human rights.
Practical guides
- Practical Guide to the WTO for human rights advocates (2004), available in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
