The ILO Convention No. 189 on Decent Work for Domestic Workers, the result of years of struggle by domestic workers' organizations and allies in trade unions together with governments and the ILO, represents a huge step forward for domestic workers.  ESCR-Net member The National Union of Domestic Employees (N.U.D.E.) is working to promote its ratification in Trinidad and across the Caribbean region.  Ratification and implementation of the Convention will mean that Domestic Workers would be able to enjoy the same rights as all other workers, including the right to be recognised as workers and subjects covered by labor rights legislation, the right to organise and bargain collectively, the right to severance benefits, the right to be covered under occupational health and safety laws and, critically, the right to recourse in instances of wrongful dismissal.

N.U.D.E.is advocating for the ratification of ILO Convention No. 189, to raise awareness among domestic workers regarding their rights, and to promote the concept of Decent Work.

Let us join NUDE in calling on governments to ratify Convention 189 and enact labor legislation to reflect the Convention and promote the right to Decent Work.

Decent Work must be at the centre of government actions to bring back economic growth and build a new global economy that puts people first.
