Workshop on Export Credit Agencies and Human Rights

In September 2005, approximately 60 activists from human rights and export credit agency (ECA) reform campaign networks came together to learn from one another; assess options for holding ECAs accountable to human rights standards in project-funding; and explore potential collaborations and joint initiatives. In the coming months, we look forward to further exploring potential areas of collective work.

An international steering committee was vital to developing our collective thinking on export credit agencies and human rights, shaping and facilitating the initiative and agenda, and identifying participants around the world. This steering committee is now helping to guide our next steps forward in terms of information sharing, further research and networking, and possibilities for strategic advocacy. The members of this steering committee include:

  • Fraser Reilly-King, Halifax Initiative (Canada)
  • Gabrielle Watson, Independent Consultant/ECA-Watch (USA)
  • Danwood Chirwa, University of Cape Town (South Africa)
  • Daniel Taillant, Centro de Derechos Humanos y Ambiente (Argentina)
  • Shalmali Guttal, Focus on the Global South (India/Cambodia)
  • Diana Bronson, Rights and Democracy (Canada)
  • David Hunter, Peregrine Consulting and CIEL (USA)
  • Tricia Feeney, Rights and Accountability in Development (UK)
  • Daria Caliguire and Chris Grove, ESCR-Net

This event was coordinated and sponsored in partnership with the Halifax Initiative and ECA-Watch, which is an international network of policy, environmental, human rights, and grassroots organizations working together to reform ECAs.
