There are nine core international human rights treaties within the Universal System of United Nations. Each of these treaties has established a committee of independent experts to monitor implementation of the core international human rights treaties. The Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) is the body that monitors implementation of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights by its States parties. The Committee cannot consider individual complaints, although a draft Optional Protocol to the Covenant is under consideration which could give the Committee competence in this regard. (please visit our resource page at http://www.escr-net.org/resources/resources_show.htm?doc_id=431553).
The Committee will consider the following State reports during the 39th session: Costa Rica, Ukraine, San Marino, Belgium, Paraguay (please visit the homepage http://www.ohchr.org/english/bodies/cescr/cescrs39.htm).
The Pre-sessional Working Group will be hold between 26 and 30 November, 2007, where the Committee will consider the following State reports Sweden, Philippines, Kenya, Bolivia, Nicaragua (http://www.ohchr.org/english/bodies/cescr/cescrwg39.htm).
