The South African Human Rights Commission will be holding public hearings into evictions, repossessions and housing on 7 and 8 November 2007.

The Commission has recently received a high volume of complaints relating to the perceived unlawful evictions and repossessions of bonded houses across Gauteng Province. There have been a number of allegations levelled against numerous institutions and bodies, such as banking institutions, estate agents and the sheriffs of the court, to name but a few, and who have all been identified by the complainants as the responsible parties for these perceived unlawful repossessions and subsequent evictions.

By virtue of the systemic nature of the complaints the Commission has received, it has decided to hold an Inquiry into these perceived unlawful evictions and repossessions.

While this Inquiry may not be able to bring direct relief to those that have been dispossessed, we Commission hope to propose a way forward so as to address problems of this nature which may arise in the future.

The Terms of Reference for the Hearings have been published in the Gauteng Provincial Gazette and are also available at http://www.sahrc.org.za/sahrc_cms/downloads/Evictions_Terms%20of%20Reference.doc
