This conference has been prepared by a diverse group of civil society organizations from around the world. We aim to bring together different constituencies that work on agriculture, trade and human rights to deepen our collective understanding of the impact of trade and investment on the right to food, to explore the impact of climate change and agrofuels, and to develop new approaches to trade and investment that put human rights at the core.

This one-week intensive course offers participants an opportunity to develop specialist-level knowledge in the field of economic, social and cultural rights (ESC rights), with a particular focus on justiciability at the national, regional and international level. It draws on a wealth of material from across the world in order to analyse existing institutionalized practices of interpretation and implementation of ESC rights, and focuses on theoretical questions and practical issues, such as effective strategies and the impact of adjudication. Application deadline is September 15.

Jointly organized by the European Parliament, the European Commission and the UN Regional Information Centre, this inter-institutional conference will focus specifically on the subject of Human Rights Defenders in celebration of both the UDHR 60th anniversary and the 10th anniversary of the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders. Participants include: Mrs Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Commissioner for External Relations; Mr Hans-Gert Pöttering, President of the European Parliament; the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights; Mrs Margaret Sekaggya, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders; Mr Thomas Hammarberg, Commissioner for HR, the Council of Europe.

The René Cassin Human Rights Prize will be given out in November 2008 by the Minister for Education. It will be an opportunity to promote the work undertaken on Human Right in schools and colleges. The laureates will be invited to participate in a gathering of Human Rights Defenders in Paris, organized by the International Federation for Human Rights. They will also be asked to participate in an open debate at the national assembly with other Human Rights Defenders, on 10 December 2008, at UNESCO Paris.

A collaborative initiative of Member States, NGOs, the DPI and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the New Human Rights Dialogue Series is a 12part, monthly series of discussion at United Nations Headquarters, leading up to the celebration on 10 December 2008 of the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The series is intended to provide a constructive, open forum to examine & debate new issues, actors, approaches, challenges and opportunities impacting on the realization of our human rights.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in partnership with the Government of Gabon, are organizing the First Interministerial Conference for Health and Environment in Africa. The conference will take place in Libreville, Gabon from 26 to 29 August 2008.
