This year alone we have seen extreme weather events and slow-onset processes resulting in catastrophic loss and damage (impacts of climate change that cannot be avoided through adaptation and mitigation activities), leading to serious human rights harm all across the world affecting millions of people, for which historical and present responsibility lies with wealthy, highly industrialized countries and powerful corporate actors. Loss and damage is a human rights crisis (more on our analysis here), and States, particularly wealthy and highly industrialized nations, have clear legal obligations to urgently and meaningfully address loss and damage, both in terms of the symptoms and the root causes. Many ESCR-Net members confront climate impacts on the frontlines and forcefully resist the structural drivers thereof. Loss and damage has thus been taken up as a collective ESCR-Net priority for the past three years.

Le 27 septembre 2022, le projet Environnement et DESC du Réseau- DESC et le groupe de travail sur les litiges stratégiques ont co-organisé une discussion en ligne sur les litiges relatifs au climat et aux droits humains : Garantir l'accès à la justice internationale pour les violations des droits humains liées au climat. Des membres de toutes les régions se sont réunis virtuellement pour apprendre de leurs expériences respectives et renforcer l'analyse partagée.
El 27 de septiembre de 2022, el Proyecto de la Red sobre Medio Ambiente y DESC y el Grupo de Trabajo de Litigio Estratégico organizaron conjuntamente un debate en línea sobre el clima y litigios en materia de derechos humanos: Garantizar el acceso a la justicia internacional por las violaciones de los derechos humanos relacionadas con el clima. On September 27, 2022, ESCR-Net’s Environment and ESCR Networkwide Project and Strategic Litigation Working Group co- hosted an online discussion on climate and human rights litigation: Ensuring access to international justice for climate-related human rights violations. Members from across regions, convened virtually to learn from each other’s experiences and strengthen shared analysis.
There is no denying that the historical and present responsibility for the climate crisis lies primarily with wealthy, highly industrialized countries and powerful corporate actors. Despite contributing the least to the climate crisis, frontline communities in the Global South are paying the price with the destruction of their territories and the erasure of their cultural heritage.

Au cours des deux dernières années, des dizaines de membres du réseau DESC se sont engagés dans des discussions inter-réseaux pour développer le rapport analytique "Building sustainable peace. Transforming conflit-affected situations for women". Over the past two years, dozens of ESCR-Net members engaged in cross-network discussions to develop the analytical report “Building sustainable peace. Transforming conflict-affected situations for women.” The report argues that in dealing with conflict-affected situations, it is vital to adopt an intersectional feminist approach via a human rights framework, and provides seven lessons and principles to guide the work in the field.
