All-Ukrainian public organization “Foundation of medical law and bioethics of Ukraine” was founded in 2008. The main aim of the Foundation’s activity is the promotion of development of medical law as a branch of law, science and educational discipline as well as bioethics. Today, Foundation sets up 16 local branch divisions. Foundation has a recognized authority between civil society representatives and authorities, manages numerous international projects and trains highly qualified young professionals. Foundation is constantly expanding its impact on the national level, involves more and more interested persons to the activities in this sphere as representatives of civil society, and educational institutions of Ukraine and authorities.
The key principles of the Foundation are human rights, rule of law and access to information, and justice. On the basis of Foundation there was created permanent court of arbitration – non-governmental independent entity by the decision of the Foundation in order to provide a fair and effective justice in the sphere of health care. In 2011, with the support of the International Renaissance Foundation at the Foundation was established an Analytical and Expert Research Center in the sphere of public health which purpose is to provide professional public examination of issues in the sphere of public health, national legislation in the sphere of health care as well as to influence the formation of state policy in this field. The Foundation actively participates in international cooperation, in particular with the Open Society Foundations (New York, USA), Association of Medical Law and Bioethics of the Czech Republic (Prague, Czech Republic), Polish Association of Medical Law (Krakow, Poland), the international consulting firm Management Systems International (MSI), USAID, Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER). The Foundation actively creates the science of medical law; in particular, it is a co-founder of scientific and practical journal “Medical Law”. During the recent years, the Foundation held a significant number of events by which it managed to increase the importance of medical law in Ukraine and awareness of its importance in the sphere of human rights in patient care.
Currently the Foundation carries out different activities in the following spheres and directions: legal education; publishing and research; advocacy; participation in policymaking in the sphere of health care; and litigation.
