Media Democracy Fund, the Ford Foundation, and Open Society Foundations have issued a Call for Proposals for a study of big-data and the practices around large-scale data collection, analysis, and use, entitled “Quantified Society: Examining the Consequences of Algorithmic Decision Making for Open Societies.” This Call for Proposals is aimed at those groups and individuals in Europe and the Global South. Proposals should assist in creating an understanding of how technologies and policies around big-data collection, analysis, and use are propelling changes in human rights and related arenas. Proposals should also include recommendations on how to address issues arising from the collection, analysis, and use of big-data. Concept notes must be received by 27 March 2015, with full proposals from semi-finalists due 22 May 2015. Research awards will range from $10,000 to $25,000. Additional details can be found here. Please let us know if you plan on submitting a proposal.
