Exxon Petition brings Climate Change into focus

ESCR-net member, Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL), is advocating for Exxon to admit the truth - to the public and in court - about what it knew about climate change and when, and be held accountable for their actions.  CIEL recently delivered a 75K+ petition to every state attorney generals calling for the investigation of Exxon and stated that this could be the “largest, longest-lasting, and most dangerous case of fraud in human history.”

In a new report released yesterday, ExxonMobil makes “predictions” about the global energy landscape in the next 25 years. Unsurprisingly, they predict that oil and gas will continue to dominate the energy market through 2040 and that oil use will actually grow by 25% during that time, ignoring both the massive growth of clean energy and the fact that the scenario they are predicting would be catastrophic for the climate.

CIEL reports that is particularly egregious for Exxon to release such a report right now, as damning allegations of the company’s longstanding knowledge of climate change and attempts to cover it up emerge, and investigators begin inquiries into this deceit.  Investigations have revealed Exxon conducting cutting-edge climate research decades ago and then, without revealing all that it had learned, worked at the forefront of climate denial, manufacturing doubt about the scientific consensus that its own scientists had confirmed.
