Tapping into the Human Right to Water: Affordability, Quality and Accessibility

Each fall, the Program on Human Rights and the Global Economy (PHRGE) at Northeastern University School of Law convenes scholars, practitioners and advocates to explore a pressing social issue from a human rights perspective. This year’s Institute is entitled “Tapping in to the Right to Water: Accessibility, Affordability and Quality” and will discuss efforts to ensure sufficient, safe, affordable and equally accessible water in the United States, and offer advocacy strategies that use human rights frameworks to advance water rights at the local, state and national levels. In particular, the Institute will discuss the disproportionate impact on people of color and otherwise marginalized populations regarding water safety and affordability.

The Institute will take place over the course of two days on Thursday, November 5 and Friday, November 6, 2015. The first day will feature two panel presentations and a keynote address by Patricia Jones of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee. On the second day, participants will engage in facilitated, small-group work designed to create concrete advocacy strategies and policy proposals to advance the right to water.
