Human rights groups criticize the monitoring and review framework of the 2030 agenda as vague and voluntary

In response to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Center for Economic and Social Rights (CESR) and the Center for Women’s Global Leadership (CWGL), together with other civil society organizations of the Post-2015 Human Rights Caucus, released a joint statement on 23 September 2015, assessing the extent to which the outcome document passes or fails the test of integrating human rights as its foundation. With respect to issues of monitoring, the group criticized the framework for monitoring and review of the agenda’s implementation as vague and voluntary. The outcome document also failed to recognize concrete ways to enable meaningful civil society participation in gathering data, follow-up and monitoring.
