The International Network for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR-Net) involves over 270 Members in 70 countries, together building “a global movement to make human rights and social justice a reality for all”.

Emerging from the second regional Treaty Initiative consultation in Kenya, African social movements and NGOs issued an advocacy statement outlining demands for binding international standards on human rights and business.

The Women and ESCR Working Group facilitated a joint briefing with the UN Committee on ESCR and CEDAW Committee, exploring challenges and openings to advance substantive equality and women’s ESCR with a focus on land, health and work.

The Corporate Accountability Working Group facilitated its third annual Peoples’ Forum on Human Rights and Business, involving over 70 social movements and NGOs from diverse regions.

The NGO Coalition for the OP-ICESCR promoted the Campaign for Ratification at the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly and the 57th Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The Strategic Litigation Working Group organized a workshop in Cabo Verde on ESCR litigation and advocacy utilizing the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on ESCR (OP-ICESCR), while advocating implementation in two events at the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

ESCR-Net helped to launch a new Consortium: Protect the Defenders, dedicated to coordinating support for the security and protection of human rights defenders.

The System of Solidarity (SOS) called for and ESCR-Net celebrated the release of Hossam Bahgat, Egyptian human rights activist and chairperson of the Board of ESCR-Net, while collecting over 1000 signatures for a petition calling on Israel to halt the destruction of the Bedouin villages of Atir and Umm al-Hiran.

The Monitoring Working Group is facilitating a new online discussion focused on linking human rights indicators to right to information advocacy.

December 10, Human Rights Day

ESCR-Net members around the world will celebrate #HumanRightsDay on December 10. As this day also marks the 7th anniversary of the adoption of the OP–ICESCR, ESCR-Net is encouraging its members and allies to Take Action for its ratification.
