The International Network for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR-Net) involves over 270 Members in 70 countries, together building “a global movement to make human rights and social justice a reality for all”.

Deepening outreach in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and the engagement of existing Arabic-speaking members, ESCR-Net is pleased to announce a Program and Membership Facilitator for the Region and the creation of an Arabic website, as well as new Facebook and Twitter accounts.

The NGO Coalition for the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (OP-ICESCR) launched a new animated video and brochure in three languages.

Members of the NGO Coalition for OP-ICESCR mobilized in support of the instrument on Human Rights Day, while the Group of Friends of the OP-ICESCR called for its ratification at the UN in New York.

ESCR-Net’s 2016-2018 Board was elected with the participation of over 60 percent of its fellow Members based on principles of the centrality of social movements and gender and regional balance.

Via the System of Solidarity (SOS), ESCR-Net sent a letter to Pakistan to denounce the ongoing detention of Board member, Saeed Baloch, as well as a letter to The Philippines to raise concern about the systematic criminalization of human rights defenders.

ESCR-Net members defined priorities for the realization of economic, social and cultural rights in North America at a consultation with the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights in Washington D.C.

Upcoming events

ESCR-Net’s Women and ESCR working group will hold a side event on 22 March, at the UN in New York during the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW60) and will launch briefing papers on women’s rights related to land, health and work.
