These perforations are not controlled, they end up both contaminating the water and taking the water away from other sectors too. Secondly, this research project seeks to gather information relevant for building alternative modes of production for women workers who lose their jobs as a result of automation, by leveraging the ‘Banquinas Act.’ If implemented properly, the Banquinas Act could provide workers access to a strip of land that they can use to produce through a model of sustainable agroecological production. This alternative form of production would not only be something positive for the workers who would have another way to support themselves but it would also result in an improvement for the environment as a whole.
About
our research project
Our research project is composed of two aspects. Firstly, we want to document the impacts of agribusiness on women’s access to employment as well as on the environment and health in the region of El Salto. The agro-industrial production model relies heavily on automation to replace the workforce, as well as having harmful effects on the environment, because in addition to the use of pesticides and the massive use of water – which in turns implies intensive drilling of the soil.
“In our country there are different conflicts that express on the one hand the issue of lack of access to land and on the other hand a need to find another way of production“
– Jorge Carpio, Fundación Promoción Humana
