For example, the current “Port city” program in Colombo, which was developed without proper discussion with the local people, is already creating a lot of issues for the local community, especially for fisher communities, women and farming groups. It also has a big impact on the sea erosion and on the environment of the country. Through this research project we’re trying to raise local people’s awareness on these issues and also to involve local civil society organizations, women groups, youth groups to campaign against this huge development efforts.
About
our research project
The National Physical Plan is a huge economic development and economic revival program that is going to be introduced in Sri Lanka. The broader objective is to attract foreign and local investment. The plan will involve accessing local communities’ land in order to boost local airports, construct new highways and power generation programs.

“The current “Port city” program in Colombo is already creating a lot of issues for the local community, especially the fisher communities (…) it has a big impact on the women’s group and farming groups. It also has a big impact on the sea erosion and on the environment of the country. This program has been developed without having a proper discussion with the local people, with the local communities. “

About
our story
National Fisheries Solidarity Organization (NAFSO) is a fisherfolk movement of Sri Lanka that works with marginalized groups such as internally-displaced persons, women and youth to promote human rights and true sustainable development, particularly in the agriculture and fisheries sectors in post-conflict Sri Lanka.
NAFSO challenges harmful development models – specifically, land and sea-grabbing – and works to empower communities whose rights are threatened by these practices in efforts to contribute to lasting peace in Sri Lanka, based on equity, social justice, democracy and full respect for the rights of women and minorities.
