The Coordinadora de Andina de Organizaciones Indigenas (Coordinator of Andean Organizations), member of ESCR-Net’s Social Movement Working Group, celebrates a new executive council.

 

March 14th is the international day of action for rivers and against dams.  ESCR-NET’s member MAB (Movement of Dam-Affected People), several other social movements and leading international organizations are taking action in over 40 countries to demand improvement in the policies and practices of decision makers in regards to dam constructions and the forcible displacement of families.

The Yakye Axa indigenous community can now take possession of the land that the Paraguayan state obtained January 31 2012 in their favor.

In a landmark ruling on the right to restitution of ancestral lands, Sawhoyamaxa indigenous community leaders, Paraguayan officials and local companies have recently signed an agreement to allow the community to return to their ancestral lands.

The State of the World's Indigenous Peoples is the result of a collaborative effort, organized by the Secretariat of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. Joji Carino from Tebtebba Foundation, an ESCR-Net member wrote the first chapter of the report; the chapter is titled Poverty and Well Being.

Recovering from a near political fall out earlier in the week over the US Nuclear deal, the Congress led UPA Government now stands on a fragile ground.  Pressure is now on the UPA to accept a Doha Deal that will destroy the foundations of Indian agriculture – affecting livelihood concerns of 65 crore farmers and food security of the nation.
