Mubende Coffee Plantations and the Bitter Taste of Eviction

Land grabbing particularly affects peasant and rural communities in Africa, threatening their right to adequate food and nutrition, water and sanitation, health and housing. In August 2001, approx. 4,000 people were violently evicted from their land of 2524 hectares in Mubende, Uganda, to pave the way for the Kaweri Coffee Plantation, owned by the Germany-based Neumann Kaffee Gruppe. 15 years later, the affected peasant communities are still waiting for justice and are suffering the terrible consequences of a“land grab”.

What does land grabbing means for peasant communities? How are States and companies involved? What does it mean for the work at the UN? We cordially invite you to a screening of the film "The Mubende Coffee Plantations and the Bitter Taste of Eviction”, followed by a discussion between advocates of the affected communities and academics from the Graduate Institute. The involved governments and company have also been invited to the event.
