The International Lawyers Project (ILP) is an alliance of talented and passionate lawyers drawn from diverse countries and cultures across the globe. They pull together teams of pro bono experts to support the policy and legal needs of marginalised communities. ILP advances economic and environmental justice and the rule of law through the provision of pro bono legal expertise to civil society, communities, and governments.
Over the last twenty years, ILP has worked on promoting and upholding economic, social and cultural rights in Global South countries, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa, through different legal tools and remedies. They have worked with civil society organisations and indigenous communities to empower and build their understanding of their rights, and grow their capacity to advocate for, protect and defend these rights. They have also provided them with legal advice and assistance to promote policy and legal reform, and support for legal research and strategic litigation. They support local communities through capacity building, working with NGOs to train and mentor paralegals to improve their legal skills and knowledge on land and environmental rights so they can better advise the communities they work in. Also ILP promotes fairer and more effective economic and fiscal policy tools and taxation policies to help states meet development goals, including enhanced rule of law and sustainability. This is done through comprehensive training on the taxation of natural resources and other international tax issues, and by working with governments and civil society organisations in the Global South to ensure that debt is properly issued and the details of it are fully disclosed, and to ensure that the debt restructuring process is equitable.
