Climate justice addresses the disproportionate impacts of the climate crisis on historically oppressed and subjugated communities worldwide. It emphasizes the human right to live in a clean, healthy and sustainable environment and advocates for accountability from those most responsible for the worsening climate catastrophe.
Frontline communities bear the brunt of climate change, facing increased exposure to extreme weather events, loss of livelihoods, and forced displacement. Inequalities between and within countries exacerbate these challenges, perpetuating cycles of poverty and social and environmental injustices.
Social and grassroots movements globally lead efforts to achieve climate justice. From indigenous-led conservation in Latin America to community-driven energy democracy initiatives in Africa, highlighting meaningful solutions towards development models that are accountable to the peoples and grounded in human rights.
ESCR-Net advances climate justice through solidarity and mutual learning. Employing a feminist intersectional approach, we strengthen cross-movement collaborations and advocate in international spaces like the UNFCCC. We confront false solutions and challenge the root causes of climate injustices, including the patriarchal, exploitative, and extractive model of development that threatens people and the planet. We hold global polluters accountable for their role in environmental destruction while revealing the realities faced by frontline communities confronting climate emergencies. ESCR-Net promotes people-led systemic solutions to address these challenges.
