System of Solidarity

The Solidarity System (SOS) is a vehicle for facilitating member-to-member solidarity and harnessing the collective voice of the ESCR-Net when members or their communities face imminent threats or attacks due to their defense of human rights. Solidarity actions–taking a diverse range of forms–are guided by members under threat and secondarily by fellow members in the same context, attentive to the unique and disproportionate threats often facing women human rights defenders and others from communities facing long-standing oppression. In addition to taking up immediate threats, ESCR-Net acts in solidarity with defenders’ wider demands for human rights and environmental justice.  We facilitate spaces for mutual learning between defenders and to deepen our shared understanding of the political economy of violence or the root causes of repression. The SOS is available to all ESCR-Net members, who can activate this mechanism on behalf of their communities and close allies.
