Porgera Red Wara Women’s Association is an organization run by Indigenous women human rights defenders who work with local communities affected by the giant Porgera Gold Mine Operation that started 3 decades ago. Focusing mainly on women impacted by the mining industry, they seek appropriate remedy mechanisms established from a bottom-top perspective to compensate for the loss and damages caused by the mine. In this regard, they push for corporate
accountability and the right to clean, healthy, peaceful and a sustainable environment based on solutions stemming from the local communities. Much of their work is collecting the stories of
indigenous women impacted by the mining operation and producing research on the human rights violations and environment degradation issues that is used for advocacy on the national and international levels.
