The Environmental Defender Law Center works to protect the human rights of people in developing countries who are fighting against harm to their environment. EDLC offers a wide range of legal services to these environmental defenders without charge. EDLC's work is driven by the core belief that legal systems must be required to protect environmental defenders and to honor the rights of their communities, and that lawyers can play a critical role in achieving these
goals.
Environmental defenders assisted by EDLC are:
- Individuals charged with crimes to stop them from raising environmental concerns
- Victims of harms resulting from resource development projects
- Communities denied a voice in environmental decisions that affect them
- Indigenous people whose traditional use of their land is threatened
