31 de enero de 2008: Declaración de solidaridad en apoyo del pueblo de Kenia de los miembros de la Red-DESC

Como miembros de la Red Internacional para los Derechos Económicos, Sociales y Culturales (Red-DESC), deseamos expresar nuestra más sincera solidaridad con el pueblo de Kenia en estos días de disturbios. Denunciamos la violencia surgida en todo el país después de un proceso eleccionario cuestionable y expresamos nuestra sincera simpatía con todas las personas que han sufrido y continúan sufriendo las desafortunadas consecuencias de las hostilidades, especialmente los más vulnerables, quienes sufren lo peor de las agresiones. Estamos conmocionados por la gran cantidad de personas que han sido desplazadas de sus hogares y tierras, muchas de las cuales han sido víctimas de violencia de género y han quedado sin acceso a la asistencia hospitalaria básica, medicamentos y alimentos. También condenamos rotundamente las restricciones a la libertad de expresión, reunión y asociación del pueblo de Kenia, entre otras violaciones de los derechos humanos. Por la presente llamamos a una resolución rápida, justa y pacífica del actual clima de represión y abuso. Finalmente, instamos al pueblo de Kenia a mantener la paz y la tranquilidad, y a respetar la justicia y la coexistencia pacífica mientras se busca una solución aceptable para la transición.
La Red-DESC promueve y defiende los derechos económicos, sociales y culturales por medio de alianzas de trabajo colectivo entre los 138 movimientos sociales, agrupaciones de base, organizaciones indígenas y ONG de todo el mundo que la conforman. Apoyamos y continuaremos asistiendo a nuestros contrapartes kenianos durante este proceso tan difícil, especialmente en la defensa y el fortalecimiento de la realización de los derechos económicos, sociales y culturales como un elemento esencial para garantizar la dignidad de todo el pueblo de Kenia, y en la lucha contra la violencia estructural de la pobreza y la desigualdad que continúan amenazando la vida y la subsistencia de los pueblos.
