As a network of over 300 social movements, organizations and human rights defenders from across 80 countries, ESCR-Net – International Network for Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights, we are writing to express our profound concern regarding the ongoing violent evictions and racist attacks against poor Black communities in KwaZulu-Natal, particularly members of Abahlali baseMjondolo (AbM). This movement, composed of more than 150,000 people living in informal settlements across South Africa, is a critical force lawfully advocating for land, housing, and dignity in communities long marginalized by systemic inequalities.
