The Andean Coordinator of Indigenous Organizations (CAOI) express concerns regarding the eviction of CONAIE from their office

On 12 December, 2013, ESCR-Net sent a letter to the Government of Ecuador to express concern about the recent closure of offices of Fundación Pachamama, which works to promote and defend the rights of indigenous people in the Amazon region.

Representatives of the Sarayaku people (Ecuador), Dejusticia (Colombia), and Fundación Pachamama (Ecuador) , with the support of ESCR-Net, came together at meetings organized by the Enxet-Sanapaná people together with Tierraviva (Paraguay) on September 26-27.  The discussions focused on enforcing decisions by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR).

The International Network on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR-Net), the Centre for Law, Justice and Society (Dejusticia) and the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights (NCHR) organized the first Latin America Strategic Workshop on Enforcement of Positive Decisions on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in Bogota (Colombia) on February 7-8, 2013, bringing together 20 lawyers and activists from across the region. The workshop was supported by the Ford Foundation and the University of Los Andes.

The Sarayaku people form one of the oldest settlements of the Kichwa People in the province of Pastaza in the Ecuadorian Amazon, and include approximately 1,300 people. In 1996, Ecuador signed a contract with the Empresa Estatal de Petróleos del Ecuador (PETROECUADOR) and a group formed with CGC (Compañía General de Combustibles, a subsidiary of Chevron, in Argentina) and la Petrolera Ecuador San Jorge S.A. for oil exploration and exploitation in Sarayaku lands.

The Coordinadora de Andina de Organizaciones Indigenas (Coordinator of Andean Organizations), member of ESCR-Net’s Social Movement Working Group, celebrates a new executive council.

ESCR-Net called on the President of Ecuador to protect the human right to life and physical integrity of Mr. Leonidas Iza, president of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities in Ecuador (CONAIE) and his family members.

The Centro de Derechos Económicos y Sociales (CDES) celebrates the Norwegian government's decision, announced on Monday Oct. 2, to cancel the debt of five countries, including Ecuador, equivalent to 80 million dollars. With this act, the Norwegian government has recognized the illegitimate nature of those debts contracted during the decade of the 70s to favor its Ship Export Campaign. This case has been widely documented by CDES since 2001.

Centro de Derechos Económicos y Sociales (CDES), on behalf of the General Secretary of Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores del Ministerio de Salud [National Union of Health Ministry Workers] and the workers represented by the union, filed a report with the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights (IACHR) against the State of Ecuador.

In its 39th session (May 16-June 3 2005), the Committee on the Rights of the Child, the supervisory body of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), issued its opinion on a possible incompatibility between the CRC and the standards in the free trade agreement being negotiated by Ecuador, Colombia and Peru, and the U.S. The Committee expressed concern about the possibility that the proposed intellectual property standards undermine the State's ability to ensure access to low cost drugs and to fulfill its obligations under international human rights law.
