The Indigenous Defenders Network of Nicaragua was created in 2022 following the closure of the Center for Justice and Human Rights of the Nicaraguan Atlantic Coast (CEJUDHCAN) due to the repressive environment for organizations and movements in Nicaragua. The objective of this Network is to contribute to the land and territory governance of the indigenous and afro descendant peoples of the Nicaraguan Caribbean Coast with a focus on social, economic and environmental justice with gender and age equality. Their areas of work are the strengthening of grassroots organizations for both autonomous and territorial governance, justice enforceability through regional and international human rights mechanisms, research on illegal exploitation of natural resources and environmental protection in the Caribbean Coast, empowerment of young and women leaders for effective and inclusive participation, as well as monitoring and documentation of human rights violations on the Caribbean Coast.
