CESR's new factsheet indicates rights retrogression and worsening living conditions in Egypt

The Center for Economic and Social Rights has produced fact sheets in 'Visualizing Rights' series, seeking to present a picture of a country's compliance with its obligation to fulfill economic, social and cultural rights. In partnership with the Egyptian Center for Economic and Social is on Egypt, CESR recently published a new fact sheet in the series on Egypt (available here). The fact sheet presents a series of graphs and other visualizations created using data from international agencies and the national statistical agency. With their accompanying text, the graphics build up an argument that since the 2011 revolution, successive regimes have failed to adequately address the economic, social and cultural rights issues facing the country that are a legacy of the Mubarak regime and, in some cases, have exacerbated them even further.

CESR presented the fact sheet to the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights last month during their review of Egypt. It offered a more concise and digestible summary of the longer, formal report also submitted to the Committee. The Committee members picked up many of the issues illustrated in the fact sheet, interrogating the Egyptian Government delegation about them in the course of their review (read more here).
