Litigation and Legal Advocacy

Through the Strategic Litigation Working Group (SLWG), collectives of members engage in various litigation and legal advocacy initiatives, whether as complainants, third-party interveners (amici), or collaborators on direct litigation. Members advocate before international justice mechanisms, such as the United Nations treaty bodies and Special Procedures, regional human rights organs–including the African human rights system, European Court of Human Rights, inter-American human rights system–and national constitutional and supreme courts, among other justice mechanisms. The work aims to advance economic, social, cultural, and environmental rights and related interdependent and indivisible rights by securing their due recognition, progressive interpretation, and application. Cases are chosen that can promote social justice, set important precedents, expand the scope of human rights guarantees, and be emblematic of affected communities’ push for transformative change.
