The Monitoring Working Group is deeply saddened by the recent passing of our Steering Committee member, Odindo Opiata. A lifelong activist and leader of human rights, Opiata’s legacy will continue to influence ESCR advocacy in Kenya, and around the world. A brilliant lawyer, pioneer of democracy and founder of Hakijamii - the Economic & Social Rights Centre in Kenya - Opiata dedicated his life to social justice. Among many memberships, Opiata served on the National Slum Upgrading Policy Task Force and the Technical Advisory Panel for UN-Habitat’s Advisory Group on Forced Evictions. Opiata’s active engagement with the Working Group broadened our capacity to hold meaningful discussions and collaborations on rights monitoring. We are truly fortunate to have gained his immeasurable insight and support. Our thoughts remain with Opiata’s family, friends, and colleagues. For those who would like to extend their condolences, please visit the facebook memorial page, RIP Odindo Opiata.
