This report is the culmination of a two-day experts meeting, "Macroeconomics and the Rights to Water and Sanitation," which took place in Lisbon, Portugal from March 31 to April 1, 2011.

Dec. 5th, 2011: Constitutional Court declares City of Johannesburg's Housing Policy Unconstitutional

The Constitutional Court today declared the City of Johannesburg's housing policy unconstitutional and ordered the City to provide temporary accommodation to 86 desperately poor people living in Berea in inner city Johannesburg. The Court was ruling on the application of Blue Moonlight Properties to evict the occupiers from its property.

Nov. 29th, 2011: Call for Action- One more step to International Convention on the Rights of Peasants

After a long-sought struggle by La Via Campesina and other organizations for further recognition and protection of the rights of peasants, the Advisory Committee of the United Nations Human Rights Council will present a final study on ways and means to further advance the rights of people working in rural areas.

July 05, 2011: REPORT: The PFF Struggle for Conservation and Protection of Mangroves Forests

During the last several weeks ESCR-Net has stood in solidarity with our member organization Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) who have mobilized in response to the clearing of mangroves and associated land grabbing activities. The PFF has recently compiled a report documenting their struggle to defend their lands, their liveihoods and their lives that ESCR-Net is proud to share here.

April 19, 2011: EIPR/NALI Workshop Participants Reflections:

In April the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR), in conjunction with the Arab Institute for Human Rights, held "The African Human Rights System: Practical Steps for Creating Effective Litigation Strategies," a workshop created to openly discuss the role of African human rights system in the wake of the recent uprisings in the region. The attached summary disusses contributions by participant and outcomes of the event.

March 27, 2010: 'Resource-cursed' Liberia Struggles in Firestone's Stronghold

Earlier this month Liberian environmental justice lawyer Alfred Lahai Brownell led a briefing on Bridgestone/Firestone's continued violations of child rights and environmental destruction. As the leading lawyer on case the against Firestone, Brownell's research work with plantation workers influenced an Alien Tort Claims Act case filed against Firestone in the United States.

March 11, 2010: Amnesty International Says DOS Country Reports Need to Be More Comprehensive

Amnesty International welcomes the Obama administration's first full contribution to assess the human rights performance of governments around the world, and in particular, the Country Reports' expanded coverage of press freedoms and discrimination against vulnerable groups. However, for a thorough assessment of global human rights, the Country Reports should be more comprehensive and include all rights, not only civil and political, but also economic, social and cultural rights.

March 09, 2010 Call to declare the Right to Food a national priority for Guatemala

Geneva/Guatemala: Several international organisations and networks that presented a report on the Right to Food call attention at national and international levels to the situation of hunger and malnutrition existing in Guatemala. They demand that the Right to Food be declared a national priority. Moreover, they urge to cease violence and threats against social, community, indigenous, peasant and trade union leaders, and to effectively protect human rights defenders.
