Masaar is composed of a group of lawyers and technology experts who launched the organization in April 2020 to defend and promote digital rights. They believe the intersection of law and technology is not just a space for legal discussions and technological innovation but a vital domain where the contours of fundamental rights and freedoms in the digital age are shaped—demanding protection and reinforcement.
Their efforts are primarily focused on Egypt, but the impact of our work extends beyond geographical borders. Digital rights are universal, and the challenges we face—such as mass surveillance, internet censorship, and restrictions on freedom of expression—are not confined to any single country but are shared concerns that affect societies worldwide.
In Egypt, the Middle East, and North Africa, digital rights are crucial in supporting democratic transformation and social development. The Internet and communications are not merely technical tools but fundamental pillars for enabling peaceful change, fostering coexistence, driving sustainable growth, and contributing to conflict resolution within communities.
They are not only committed to protecting digital freedoms; we aspire to reimagine a digital space where rights are deeply embedded, access to knowledge and technology is available to all without discrimination, and voices are genuinely free.
